Review of Distant Shores

Distant Shores by Kristin Hannah is an insightful, character-driven novel that explores marriage, how a wife may see herself, and the quiet ways people grow apart—and sometimes back together. The story of Elizabeth and Jack feels realistic, especially in how it portrays the ups and downs of long-term relationships.  As much as I liked reading about Elizabeth following her dreams, the story turned a bit sappy.

Hannah does a good job capturing Elizabeth’s sense of restlessness and her desire to rediscover herself, which many of us may relate to. The pacing, however, was a bit slow in places, and some of the emotional turns are predictable. Still, the story is an easy and engaging read.

This novel lacks some of the drama found in Kristin Hannah’s other books, but it offers a good look at second chances and the possibilities for personal growth. I’ll give it 3.5 stars.
